Federico Zuccaro noted that, “When [his brother Taddeo] was living in the house of Calabrese he could never make drawings in the daytime and hardly ever in the evenings, and at night he had to go to bed in the dark because he was grudged even a drop of oil for a lamp; but his desire was so great that he would get up and draw by moonlight on the windows.” Here Taddeo Zuccaro has leapt out of bed half-dressed in order to frantically sketch the Tiber river, Castel Sant’Angelo, and the dome of Saint Peter’s basilica under construction by moonlight. He has only had time to put on one slipper, while the rest of his clothing lies haphazardly beside the bed in the corner. Federico added many small details of everyday life: the chamber pot under the bed, the jagged board Taddeo used to support his paper, and the shutters on whose makeshift surfaces he has drawn figures. These all create a vivid impression of a young artist’s material life in Renaissance Rome.

This is a week long workshop for only 1500$ which includes instruction/lodging and transportation.

You will need various materials for the trips.

Pen and ink set (Crow Quill, Nib holder with nibs, brown ink(i recommend walnut ink or sepia), different containers such as film containers for mixing your ink, soft brushes)

A good quality sketchbook or good quality paper. I recommend Fabriano Tiempolo paper.

Pencils/erasers/sharperners – I recomend a 2mm lead holder and lead sharpener. Its easy to use and lasts a very long time

Watercolors if you would like to paint

In Castro Daire you can have the option of staying in a quinta soto Covo. The model will be arranged for 2 days, and will pose outside this amazing home in the Mountains. We will have a model for a section of this course where the model will pose outside in a beautiful rustic bed and breakfast house in the mountains of Portugal.

The Northern Half is filled with castles and villages, which give you a lot of inspiration for drawing. It is also where i am from. I will also be having a Southern Portugal Workshop at a later date. Email me for more Details

(born Sept. 24, 1796, Paris, Fr.died June 29, 1875, Paris) French sculptor. The son of a goldsmith, he was apprenticed at 13 to an engraver. He studied at the cole des Beaux-Arts (181823) and began to sculpt animal forms 1819. Influenced by Thodore Gricault, he had a unique talent for rendering dynamic tension and exact anatomical detail. His most famous works depict wild animals devouring their prey; he also rendered groups of domestic animals. His notable bronzes include Lion Devouring a Gavial Crocodile (1831) and an equestrian statue of Napoleon at Ajaccio, Corsica (186065).

Beginning/Intermediate Sculpture

For centuries Raphael has been recognised as the supreme High Renaissancepainter, more versatile than Michelangelo and more prolific than their older contemporary Leonardo. Though he died at 37, Raphael’s example as a paragon ofclassicism dominated the academic tradition of European painting until the mid-19th century.

Raphael (Raffaello Santi) was born in Urbino where his father, Giovanni Santi, was court painter. He almost certainly began his training there and must have known works by Mantegna, Uccello, and Piero della Francesca from an early age. His earliest paintings were also greatly influenced by Perugino. From 1500 – when he became an independent master – to 1508 he worked throughout central Italy, particularly Florence, where he became a noted portraitist and painter of Madonnas.

In 1508, at the age of 25, he was called to the court of Pope Julius II to help with the redecoration of the papal apartments. In Rome he evolved as a portraitist, and became one of the greatest of all history painters.

He remained in Rome for the rest of his life and in 1514, on the death of Bramante, he was appointed architect in charge of St Peter’s.
